It shows them you’re willing to help the Christmas Tree Charmy shirt in addition I really love this company through the transition and to prove yourself but not willing to set yourself up to be exploited by them (extra leadership with paying for it). It’s still a risk and the very fact that they wanna play this game now suggests they’ll play games with you later. Only other option is to say “no thank you I’m happy where I am” and make them sweeten the compensation now to get you to accept it. But they could just let you go too. Get it in writing. I definitely experienced the “I will give you the title when we’re both comfortable” and was replaced within three months with a rude and cold person who was great at putting on an act but genuinely unqualified. Derailed a big part of my life after I had relocated for the role. These companies don’t care about you so get it in writing.

Manager here: Ask them for quantifiable, measurable criteria that are under your control to achieve. None of this “when we’re comfortable” stuff. Don’t be confrontational, but confront them. A good boss will be able to give you a list of goals that *you* control (e.g. not company goals). A bad boss will basically dance around the Christmas Tree Charmy shirt in addition I really love this “when we’re comfortable” statement. In the prior case, you have a decent shot at earning/justifying the promotion and associated raise. In the second case, you’re likely being strung along and should view the new title as fodder for your next job search. Get it in writing. I think something important to add is a time frame. Otherwise, they’ll just put it off forever. “Upon successful completion of the probationary period, 3 weeks, Joe Smith will officially take the title of Bad Ass Manager at a rate of $XX.”
