All mine had trust funds which i plowed every penny into from the Christmas Santa Popstar Marilyn Monroe shirt in other words I will buy this day they were born, never took a holiday for years so they could all have 20k each come 18yrs old Never paid anything, would never ask my kids to pay anything. It’ll get downvoted cause Reddit, but lots of people don’t feel the need to take money from their children. Whatever their age. I think charging a proportional rate for their share of utilities plus food is totally fair. If you insist on charging board for their rooms why not move that money into separate saving accounts and let them know that they will get that portion back when they are ready to move out. It will help with house deposit/cost of furnishing a home. More practically the less they save the longer they are under your roof. Saving for a house as a solo is a daunting task these days. Don’t make them wade through mud to get there.

Charging £500 seems like a way to accidentally keep them at home longer than they otherwise might be as they may struggle to save. When I was in the Christmas Santa Popstar Marilyn Monroe shirt in other words I will buy this same situation/salary 6 years ago I was paying 300 a month and more than able to save up for future plans. Hope this helps Me and my mum agreed to 20% of my pay. That way its not set in stone, my mum actually gets money to help and if I had less hours it wasn’t crippling. My mum switched it round when I still lived at home and asked me what I thought would be fair, rather than telling me an amount. I ended up paying £400 a month as that’s roughly what it cost for a room with bills included in a house in the closest town to where we lived. I didn’t grow up with money so I was happy to finally be able to help my mum out. I earned about £1000 a month after tax at the time so had £600 left to myself a month which worked out alright back then. Mid to late 00s in Wales.
