Back in the early ’80s, I was in my early 20s, and taking my new girlfriend out for dinner at a Greek restaurant. Anyway, I’d never been to a Greek restaurant before, because I was from Teesside. And working-class. But hey, I thought… “I’ve been to Poly, I read The Guardian, I’m probably middle-class now! And my girlfriend’s from Goole so, y’know…” So the laminated menu (…) arrived, and I suggested we order a meze (“Apparently it’s pronounced ‘mezzay’ not ‘meez’ “, I helpfully mansplained), probably because I’d read about it The Guardian. So, subsequently, this whole array of dishes arrived, all filled with unfamiliar and slightly scary-looking ingredients… some of them covered in sauces!… that weren’t HP or ketchup! But, to show how worldly and confident and sophistimicated I was, I decided to engage the authentically olive-skinned and swarthy waiter by asking about the main ingredient of one the dishes: Reader, I did have the good grace to immediately burst out laughing at myself for having been the very end of a bell. I was on a tour in Australia and the guy was talking about how bad the cane toads were and the damage they did and how they came over on ships from England (basically blaming us) and I asked if they were worse than the criminals we sent over. He got a bit huffy and said no and he was descended from one of those criminals I’d essentially just called an invasive pest. British humour sometimes gets lost in translation. A Brit I know went to Japan to meet his girlfriend’s parents for the first time. Here’s how it went on the first evening:

My Spanish was just good enough to cotton on that the street had been renamed after Franco’s death and the driver was slightly put out at the mention of his name. Wanting to pay for something in Ibiza and having only very limited Spanish (and no Catalan) I said “Me puede pagar” instead of “Se puede pagar”. The bloke was very amused at the idea that he would pay me! After a long flight, walked out to the edge of the curb, looked to the right, saw no cars coming… Almost got collected by a bus coming the other way as they obviously drive on the right. I was in Amsterdam going from place to place and smoking a bit ….I was absolutely famished so I thought I’d head up to the Damrak to get some scran because MUNCHIES….at the time I was working as waiter so I thought I would order a few things and carry them on one arm…..everything was cool until I got back to the hotel which happened to be owned by the turks,…who are definitely anti drunk stoned British….I was warned that if I didn’t eat it I would have it for breakfast,. So trying to be a clever dick I’m trying to climb the stairs and eat,…at exactly the same time a gaggle of GERMANS came stomping down and bumped right into me….the food went everywhere and I was told rather sternly how in the hell us British won the war….I mean seriously…..sour krauts
