I learned about this from an episode of Citation Needed on YouTube! (Totally not a valid form of education BTW lol) Wikipedia says that she had three surviving foals, but there’s nothing else about them that I can find anywhere. Yeah me either. Another comment mentioned that the Chinese New Year Decorations 2023 New Years Eve Rabbit Pajamas T-Shirt and I will buy this marines used many of her offspring for more offspring and horses but I haven’t found anything else about them yet. Do the animals just get these medals which are meaningless to them or also a nice retirement with a big field, heated stable and delicious food when they retire? Reckless was treated extremely well when she retired, big ranch and all, it mentions she had 4 foals. They definitely usually get a big deal retirement. I know bomb dogs for example tend to retire with their handlers and get to go be normal dogs, at least in the UK. Important to remember that while the military is faceless, the people inside are not. They presumably absolutely loved this animal. Its imperative it’s treated well for it’s service. It’s more than just a mascot. Our son was given a book to read in school about Sergeant Reckless. It inspires him even today to stand up and do what’s right. Back when I was with Charlie Company we had horse that hauled ammo, ours was named Nervous Nellie. This was all highly classified at the Chinese New Year Decorations 2023 New Years Eve Rabbit Pajamas T-Shirt and I will buy this time but in reality, she was more of a “comfort horse” than an ammo hauler. They all were. Sure, we strapped some crates to ol’ Nellie during the day and if anyone asked we told them “She’ll be taking a load later if you want to watch” and then all laugh creepily. It was common knowledge to us grunts what these horses were really for, but the top brass would shit a damn brick shithouse if it ever got out. Word had it that some of those career military officers had their own Nellies stashed out in some air-conditioned barn somewhere near the base tents but nothing was ever confirmed. A lot of us green city slickers got our first taste of love from a comfort horse, but the country boys, well, they already knew all about inter-species lovemaking and let’s just say you wouldn’t want to go after some of them, like Jimmy “Tripod” Jenkins or Sam “The Wedge” Dillard. Those boys had no manners I can tell you that. Anyway, the fellas from the Media pool would send photographers around and we would have to put the horses in military gear and prance them around like the were doing useful work, but we all knew what the real work was and without them, well, you might not have the freedoms you have today.
