I wound up in much the Chainsawnuts Man Shirt so you should to go to store and get this same situation with a previous employer. The company running the 401K couldn’t do anything without the previous employer’s signoff. Then my current employer switched our 401K’s to that same company. Magically my money was suddenly able to be switched to my current account inside of a week, after 4 years of trying to get it transferred to my IRA at different company. Now I’m wondering how hard it’s going to be to roll it over to my IRA when I retire in January. Her company actually can’t do it. She has to contact whoever is managing it. If she cashes out, be aware she’s going to take a hit on income tax and early withdrawal penalties. She will have to declare the full amount on her federal tax return next year, and depending on how much other tax she paid, may end up.owing back taxes.

The plan documents will describe how they measure years of service & the Chainsawnuts Man Shirt so you should to go to store and get this percent of employer contribution that is vested at each anniversary (and what % they can claw back) She needs to direct all her questions to the custodian of the 401k. It’s usually an investment company. She should know which one because the company provides that information when you’re hired. Also, a lot of them have an online portal where you can choose your investments and elections. How does she not know where her money has been going? Not only that, but you get a statement from the company every year at tax time. She should have gotten six over the years if she’s held it for six years. Contact the US Dept of Labor & speak with someone in the ERISA division. They will light a fire under the former employer’s butt. Been there, done that with great success. Does your GF work at Enron? I’m kidding, but not kidding….they froze the linemen’s 400ks that were heavily invested in Enron stock, while the executives were busy cashing themselves out….
