As a less conspiratorial answer than “the Captain Commando cartoon shirt in contrast I will get this powers that be want us fighting each other instead of them” – progressive politics has gotten a lot more extreme, and naturally people are reacting to it. Progressivism is a tool that eventually runs into an “infinite growth” problem – there are only so many reasonable social causes out there to be championed. The issue is the tool has stayed past it’s welcome and now is desperately trying to sustain itself by creating causes to fight for where there doesn’t really need to be any. It’s one thing when you’re fighting to give half the population the right to vote, and another entirely when you’re trying to enshrine the right for .005% of the population to be treated as the opposite gender in all social situations. Sorry, but “trans rights” doesn’t *need* to be a political wedge issue – if American democrats dropped the whole thing tomorrow, it’d inconvenience a miniscule fraction of the population, and make huge amounts of republicans, especially younger ones, more sympathetic to their policy. I can’t imagine this will be popular on reddit, but if people were willing to say “alright, social progress is paused for the moment, we’re giving up all the faculty-lounge nonsense, no more drag queen story hour or prosecutors refusing to charge thieves”, the democrat base would grow massively. People, in general, are favorable towards more generous economic policy, so long as it isn’t coupled with absurd nonsense.

Social media, sure. But, really, more people understand just how vile so many aspects of our government, economy, and society are than ever. Because everyone finds other things to blame except for themselves: russia, social media, liberals, conservatives etc. We reached a tipping point where the Captain Commando cartoon shirt in contrast I will get this center of peoples life is no longer restricted to where we are. It started long ago Books, then NEWS papers, then Radio, then Phones, then TV, then the internet and then mobile phones all removed barriers and enabled economies of scale for information flow. But it wasn’t until the internet that the center of engagement started shifting, mobile phones accelerated that and social media accelerated it even more. I think our higher standard of living plays into it as well. Once we started to live good comfy lives, it’s easy to be aghast at the brutes of the past. With the increased information flow we’re also exposed to all the bad things that ever happened and are happening. That’s not mentally healthy for us. So now that we’re comfy; have the ability to know about the bad things happening; don’t want to be brutes like the past; so we want someone to take the blame for us not giving up our comfort to learn about the current bad things much less address them.
