My mom is overprotective and it’s suffocating me. Since childhood I have so many restrictions like not being allowed to go to friend’s place, or relative’s as “they can’t take care of me well.” The first time I went out with friends was in college, in second semester, that too I needed to fight with her to go to a place just nearby home. This bubble has stopped me from understanding and knowing how to interact with people as I never experienced much bonds. What struck me one day was when I was hurrying to leave a meeting and my prof asked why. Getting out of overprotectiveness for me has been a slow, planned journey of introducing small but firm steps of independence. Like sometimes I would not text when I reach college “because I immediately got into the class” (she had a habit of anxiously looking at the phone until I texted her safely reached). Then slowly I stopped altogether. Be prepared for the resistance from her side. Be rebelious. But don’t go about being risky while you rebel. Do not rebel just for the sake of rebelling. This. I experienced this as well. Not to this extend but it used to be there. Slowly I brought in changes which sort of became the norm after the while. In turn, I stick to clear boundaries that don’t endanger me while also getting to enjoy my freedom. After some time my mom herself became less worried as she knew she could trust me and I’ve never misused it or given her a reason to worry unnecessarily.
