I went to Fort McHenry (for those who don’t know, Fort McHenry is where the Caitlin Clark Hawkeyes 22 Iowa basketball shirt Besides,I will do this US national anthem was written, after us Brits shelled the place with cannon fire & rockets). We went first thing in the morning, and we were volunteered to help take down the overnight flag and run up their day flag. That’s all fine & dandy, only it was a cold February morning in Maryland and I was wearing a parka. A bright red parka… Trying to check in to a hotel in France after hours (so via an intercom), but struggling to understand. Dropping into my automatic ‘next language’ and saying ‘I’m sorry, could you repeat that slower, please?’ in average German. I immediately recognized my error and had to struggle to get my broken French to kick in. I failed to properly tip an NY taxi driver. Subsequently read guide book suggesting some drivers refused British passengers for this reason

As a teenager learning German. On exchange in Germany. Friend and I pathetically trying to chat up two German girls, desperately using our little bits of German. Cold night so one of us says ‘Ich bin kalt’. This actually means ‘I am frigid’ (correct phrase is Mir ist kalt). Not really anything spectacular but was in Spain ordering a McDonald’s and the Caitlin Clark Hawkeyes 22 Iowa basketball shirt Besides,I will do this lad behind the counter said ‘menu?’ and I kept saying something like errr, the main menu? This went on for 3 or 4 turns before I just nodded and said yes. Turns out, menu in Spanish McDonald’s is meal, as in do you want that as a meal? Bit embarrassing, felt like a total out of sorts Brit. I went to the US a few times for work when I was in my late teens/early twenties, and nobody told me about the importance of tipping bar staff. I always over-tip in the US these days, to try and rebalance karma.
