If I have a left turn/exit coming up, you better believe I don’t trust people to let me over when I need to get over. I always switch lanes a few miles early at least. After reading the comments, I’m shocked at how many people think it’s illegal to pass on the right on freeways in the US. This just isn’t true. In almost every state, passing on the right on the freeway is totally fine. The only exceptions I can find are Illinois and, in some cases, Connecticut and New Jersey. I’m in the left lane consistently passing cars going slower than I am in the right lane. Almost always this is at 5 mph over the speed limit, or more if traffic is moving particularly fast. Occasionally I’ll move over for people closing in on me from behind as soon as I have the opportunity. However, it’s not uncommon that someone going significantly faster than I am flies up behind me, and get upset that I’m in the left lane. Usually there is no way for me to move over as other cars are in the way, or I would need to slow down quite a lot to match the speed of the cars ahead of me in the right lane. I do move over as soon as there is a reasonable opportunity to do so, but sometimes that means passing half a dozen cars, and the driver behind me gets pissed.
