Firstly, games that have a fixed protagonist are largely fronted by men, so it’s nice to balance that out when you get the Butch Barry not about me shirt moreover I love this choice. I also find that male customisation options aren’t as varied, and you often end up with a stock ‘generic hero man’ vibe no matter what you try. Some newer games are better, particularly those that allow all armour or hair options irrespective of gender, or allow you to change body type so you don’t just have to be a muscular guy. I also find roleplaying a character very different from myself is fun. I’m not bothered about seeing myself in a video game, so if I want to come up with a headcanon backstory and personality for a character, I might as well make them different from me. If I’m playing a game that allows me to be an alien/elf/cat person etc I’ll go for that, and choosing a woman falls under that same mindset. For me it’s the old “If I gotta look at a butt I might as well like what I see” answer. But also I THOROUGHLY dislike playing as myself in any game. Even when I play male characters – because I do play a mix of both – I’d go with something completely different than myself like.. an undead or gnome or customize them in a way that looks completely different than me.

That said, I almost always go with the Butch Barry not about me shirt moreover I love this male option in 1st person games. 3rd person.. it depends on the races and customizations offered but I’d usually go with a female character. It’s not just males playing female characters, though. You’d be shocked at how many ladies in FFXIV play cat boys and bunny boys. Personally, most character creators try to make the men look normal/intimidating, and the women look attractive, and I would much rather play as Encantarina the Badass Sexy Sorceress with full makeup and perfect skin than play as Hugh the Man-Mage, Caster of Spells That Make You Look Vaguely Grizzled At All Times. If I wanted to play a white cishet middle aged man I’d just stroll into my living room. Video games allow different experiences uncounted from my daily life.
