Have a minimum number in your head, yes, but also be curious and assertive and assume there is a winning arrangement for everyone yet to be found. Edit: … and don’t forget to explore other aspects of compensation: healthcare benefits, commission, bonus, equity, perks and other taxable benefits like a phone or car, etc. none of this is relevant (minus total comp). If OP isnt going to leave for a salary cut, OP should state as much to the Buckle up buttercup you just flipped my bitch switch snoopy shirt but in fact I love this recruiter/HR. OP should specify the number at which they would leave, and stick to that number. Just tell them you want 100k. Things already look bleak so you might as well throw up the hail mary shot. You never know until you ask. What’s the low of the range? The top is reserved for those with extremely specific skills or those that do not fit into the next higher pay bracket based on roles and responsibilities. What they’re offering you is likely in the middle. I’ve read many replies I agree with and some I disagree with. But let me share something I learned once from a career coach… It was the BEST lesson I ever learned when negotiating my salary…! It served me quite well, as you will read, if you choose to read my very long reply… From the get-go, the career coach stressed to me that first and foremost you SELL yourself. You qualify yourself for the position absolutely and unequivocally. Meaning: They need to see you as a Rock Star. They need to want you, BAD! So much so that no HR BS or salary range, or union ranges for the position should stand in the way. All that comes before any talk about salary. Once they are already salivating for you, that’s when THEY will make you an offer. Not you. Let them make the offer first. (Remember, at this point, they WANT you already…! So the chance of a low salary offer is much less likely…) Then, once you hear the number, here’s how you act, per my career coach’s wise teachings: THEN: Immediately after that, repeat the amount they offered you, change your face suddenly to profound disappointment, and name your price, as high as you believe you are worth, with words similar to “I cannot work for less than” Then turn your face away from the person/people, look at the floor, and remain absolutely silent. Break eye contact! For as long as necessary. It’s THEIR move now. You don’t say another word until they reply something back to you, and keep staring at the floor. This may take seconds. This may take even a minute or more! I clearly remember the career coach when she taught me that. She said: “Those will be the longest seconds of your life! But hold on to your silence! No matter what!”

And so I did. Exactly as she taught me. And that’s exactly how I went from a $46,000 a year salary position, to my current job, where I am at the Buckle up buttercup you just flipped my bitch switch snoopy shirt but in fact I love this higher range of a 6 figure salary/year position, overnight. Seriously. I’m not kidding you. I have no reason to lie either. I’m a nobody with no face and nothing to gain by lying to anyone here. Nothing to gain by bragging since I know no one and no one knows me. I am simply telling you what I learned and how it worked exactly as the career coach explained it would. Now, all that said, yes, I was severely underpaid at my previous job, and extremely well qualified for the position. So much so that during the interview not only I had answers to their questions but also some of the questions, I told them they were asking the wrong questions, why they were wrong, what they should be asking instead, and what the answer to the correct question was… (It was a committee of 16 people interviewing me.) During the interview, even before we were finished, they were already texting the CIO to do whatever it took to get me hired… After the interview ended, I was brought to the CIO’s office and he said: “Seriously…, all you need to do now is negotiate your salary with the COO. If I don’t hire you my team will kill me! My phone was vibrating like crazy in my pocket with their text messages!”
