In most cases, making a kid finish dinner is a matter of proper nutrition. I have small kids and they’ll get bored at the Brussels Belgium Trade Fair 1930 Foire Commerciale T-Shirt but in fact I love this table and say they aren’t hungry. Half an hour later I can hear a bag of chips in the kitchen lol. So in that case I’ll have them eat “a few more bites” a couple of times until most of it is gone. It’s not me forcing them to eat, it’s me knowing they’ll eat garbage if they don’t finish their dinner. But it’s a balance. If they’re clearly actually not hungry I won’t force them to finish (though I’ll reasonably suspect some pre dinner snacking happened) or if they genuinely don’t like something I won’t force them to eat it after a few tries. What I will say and wrap it up with is this, kids have very little control in their own lives. When they go to bed, what they do, what they wear, all that, is up to someone else. They’ll often use food and refusal to eat certain foods as a way to gain some agency and I get that. My wife has a 6yo and it definitely takes some coaxing, encouragement, bribery, whatever you want to call it. It can get super frustrating but i think we’ve got a good system down and she’s a good eater. Had her friend over the other day who is super picky and it was a real wake up call.

It is, and I see this in all of the Brussels Belgium Trade Fair 1930 Foire Commerciale T-Shirt but in fact I love this top comments here, but none of them are answering why. It’s often one of two things. 1. It’s a power/control thing that bad parents see as being necessary to get the kids to ask “how high” when told to jump. 2. It’s a generational holdover from a point in history where your ancestors lived in poverty. One common source of this today in the US is the Great Depression. Back then, if you were parents barely scraping by to keep your family alive, you quite literally could not afford for ANY food to go to waste, and this was at a point where if you were that poor, you almost certainly didn’t have a way to save leftovers like a refrigerator. Meals were irregular, getting enough food to feed the family was a blessing. So if your kid sat at the table, ate two thirds of what you gave them, and then stopped, it wasn’t an option. You had to force that kid to take in as many nutrients as possible at that sitting because it was often unpredictable when you would be able to present them with another full plate, and not maximizing that intake whenever you could had the potential to lead to malnutrition. The kids often didn’t understand that at a young age, they just learned that “Even if I’m full, I have to clean my plate. Those are the rules.” So they then grow up, and even if they get to a point where they’re financially stable, when they have kids, they pass on that requirement. Not because they think their kids will starve, but because those are the rules.
