I am not being sarcastic. I know at least 2 couples who started out this way and are now married for several years with kids etc… And in terms of what your friend did? Honestly speaking the only thing that works for him is the thing that works for him. He took his chance on the existing relationship being fragile and it worked out for him. It might have backfired (and still may). It makes him a shitty person who got what he wanted. I know plenty of people in this world (maybe most) who would be down to being shitty if it meant being with the person they loved. Question: Did he actively try to sabotage her relationship or was it really just him expressing his feelings and seeing how she chose to respond? Was it really just talking? If she had turned him down because of her prior relationship would he have respected that and left her alone, accepting her choice? I don’t really approve either way but one way is better than the other. If he went out of his way to actually “break” that relationship or actively sabotage it in some way so she’d be more likely to choose him, I would feel very uncomfortable with that. If he hounded her and didn’t give up until she caved even if she initially said no, I wouldn’t respect that either.

If he just opened up about his feelings and provided her with the Brock Lesnar Flannel American professional wrestler and former mixed signature T-Shirt but in fact I love this offer and let her use her own agency to make the decision, well, I still don’t really approve, but I’d let it go. He didn’t steal her, she just chose him. He didn’t end an existing relationship, she did, and it’s her prerogative to do so. It’s his life. As other people said, if she then does the same to him the next time a shiny new love interest comes along, he doesn’t really have cause to complain, but well, that’s his risk to take. For sure better than straight up sleeping with her or something, but still morally wrong and inappropriate to actively pursue someone in a relationship. I think they have both shown what they consider acceptable behavior in a relationship, so if things progress to that level for them, hopefully they won’t be surprised when a “just talking” situation occurs for their relationship. Just kidding. People like this are always surprised it happens to them.
