Forty years later, I’m back in a small town. It’s a small town on Long Island, as different as can be from the Breast Cancer Awareness Lion Head She Didn’t Lose The Battle She Fought To The Very End Shirt and by the same token and small town of my birth. There are artists and writers. New Yorkers, really. People who still live there part time, or used to live there. But it is small, and like Dallas, the commercial heart is just one stretch with one stoplight. There are only a few stylish stores. The deli does not have gluten-free bread.

The country has cars going 60 miles an hour on dirt roads and people with deer heads and guns mounted in their basements.
