Savoring the Breast Cancer Awareness In October We Wear Pink Hummingbird T-Shirt in other words I will buy this reflexive in-breath and slowly strengthening my diaphragm became a daily practice—15 minutes each morning, and periodically as I went through my day. You could find me doing whispered ah’s behind my mask while shopping in Trader Joe’s produce aisle. During meetings, I sat tall and square, preparing to speak by breathing low and unlocking my throat. Then, after 10 days, it just happened. Almost unbelievably, there was a tiny rattle in my chest, like an old engine in which something had come loose. Without extra effort, my voice buzzed and glided out an octave lower for the first time ever. My ribs vibrated. For days it went on like this. Did my husband notice? “Now I only notice when you talk in the old voice,” he said.

The transformation seemed complete, but the Breast Cancer Awareness In October We Wear Pink Hummingbird T-Shirt in other words I will buy this greater surprise was that maybe it had just begun. One morning, I got on another work call, grounded myself in my chair and heard Jean’s voice in my head: “Allow sound to come.” When I spoke, however, not only did my voice ring low, but, remarkably, I said things I didn’t know I would say. In fact, I relayed thoughts I never had before—detailing an obstacle hampering a creative project, and one I had not been conscious of until that moment. On another call, I introduced myself in a way that I’d never conceived of myself: “I’m a writer,” I said. “Though I tried to kill writing, it would not die.” I heard myself speaking, and was amazed both by the deliciously low tones, and the content. How many novel ideas had I lost to a restricted throat over the years?
