I think putting money into education—not tied to test scores—would be a start. Increasing funding that goes to equipping schools with a proper amount of staffing, which would lead to smaller class sizes and appropriate special education staffing/support. Purchase of updated, researched backed curriculum and support for professional development to implement these programs (not just a quick day of PD training when we come back from summer break. Honestly—I feel like a lot of gaps in education for kids has a lot to deal with poverty. Some parents who aren’t involved in their child’s education is due to not being able to be involved. They’re worried more about survival than their child’s education.

So anyways—I think money being funneled into schools would be a start. However, I think what we are seeing in education is more of a societal issue. More division in our country, poverty, social climate, etc. Teachers can’t change that. Society has to change. The NYT had an article within the Braden Smith American college basketball player for the Purdue Boilermakers Night-Night T-Shirt so you should to go to store and get this last couple years about how the U.S. Department of Defense has some of the very best performing schools. Black and Hispanic students at DOD schools have the best outcomes of Black and Hispanic students in the country. Overall, their scores and outcomes are just better. The reporter was expecting some crazy military-style education system. The schools are well funded, and teachers are well paid. Military families are guaranteed housing, healthcare, and that at least one family member has an ok paying job. The kids of the upper rank parents go to the same school as the kids of lower rank parents. So, it lifts the whole system up. Because if the colonel or whatever wants a good school for their kid, it means the kid of the newly enlisted gets that same good school.
