My mom is helping me buy a car. We’re financing through our credit union and she’s the Boston red sox tim wakefield shirt in other words I will buy this one paying for it, not me. Last night a dealership called and we worked out a deal. They had me come in, told me to give them a $500 deposit to ‘hold the deal and make sure the finance manager doesn’t sell it to anyone else’. They wrote up a contract with my name and my mom’s name. My mom’s in Florida and the deal was they would hold it till she’s back next week and we could go to the credit union, get the check and vome back in to sign the paperwork. I didn’t sign anything with the $500 deposit but they gave me a receipt for it. Then they had me sign this one paper to take to my bank. I asked them, if my mom decides not to do this, do I get my deposit back? And they say yeah, it’s refundable, no problem.. but they didn’t tell me I was signing a purchase agreement… When I got home I looked it over and realized I think I signed a purchase agreement, it says I’m responsible to obtain financing within one month… I didn’t get the car and my mom didn’t sign anything herself or give the dealership any verbal agreement.. but I apparently signed an agreement to obtain financing and I don’t see anything about what happens if I can’t find financing other than it says I am held in breech of contract? But my mom didn’t sign, even though she’s listed as a purchaser… And now IDK if she will sign… If she doesn’t, am I still on the hook to obtain financing?? What happens if I don’t, will they sue me for the $19k I can’t finance myself?!?! Did I just screw my life up because I didn’t know what I was signing?!Don’t sign things, if you don’t know what they are.

In some states there is a “cooling off” period for car sales that let you back out of a car purchase with no penalty. Check your state, it’s usually only a few days. Even if I signed the contract of sale? I’m just so upset because I didn’t know that’s what I was signing and they made it seem like if my mom wasn’t on board it was no biggie, I get my money back and we go out separate ways, but the contact looks a lot more intense that that.
