There are things in Ukraine they want, including national optics. Russia annexing Ukraine would be a historical, cultural, and narrative morale booster for Russia as a government reinforced by propaganda. Perhaps it is simpler if you use the Boston celtics let’s have a beer and watch your team sports shirt and by the same token and translation table “Nazi”=”anyone who opposes Russia.” (Related: often the way to oppose Russia taking over your country in the 1930s–1940s was to ally with Nazis, but those people are all dead now). The closest you can get is fringe right-wing stuff that also occurs in Russia, but in Ukraine the fringes adopted Nazi imagery and memes. Most prominent is the “Azov” battalion, but in reality, these groups have no power in Ukraine and the Azov group is no longer a free-floating goon squad but operating within military command structures. And this is true. Israel itself is a government of fascist tendency (in practicality, neo-nazi with muslims replacing jews for obvious reasons as the target of most hatred).

Boston celtics let’s have a beer and watch your team sports shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

Now, that is not new, and doesn’t change anything about the Boston celtics let’s have a beer and watch your team sports shirt and by the same token and illegitimacy about the Russian invasion. But this is international politricks, nobody cares abut legitimacy lol. The US clearly doesn’t, China doesn’t, even Argentina doesn’t care so surely Russia wouldn’t care either. They are arming Ukraine, Azov is merely one battalion, it’s not a regime. That’s not how it works. That’s not how anything works. Not to mention the Russians themselves have at least half a dozen neo Nazi units. Does that make Russia a neo Nazi regime? It’s also disputed how much Azov is still neo Nazi currently since it’s integration and replacement of combat losses, unfortunately it’s basically impossible to verify any claims on the subject.
