Ensuring prisoners appear in court is literally why Rikers exists. Spoiler: The $500,000 per prisoner is not going toward their welfare or rehabilitation. It’s going to an agency that has carved itself out a large slice of the NYC Budget and they’re happy to spend it: on themselves. On corrupt contracting. On no-show jobs. Anything but their mission and the prisoners. This is what the Federal Monitor has found and really the only reason the Feds haven’t taken over Rikers yet is probably because they’re going to get stuck with the bill while Corrections is allowed to continue not doing their job, at least in the beginning of any Federal takeover.

NYC Corrections has outlasted many mayors who have tried to change this sad state. It’s past time for Federal assistance breaking the artificial reason this corruption continues: a union contract that makes NYC Corrections basically immune from any oversight whatsoever. So you could be picked up for anything and then just die in jail and nobody’s going to report shit? How else can we possibly interpret this “law?” He didn’t start it but he’s certainly not stopping it. He’s probably making it worse, even. We were like 3000 votes from someone who would have tried to stop it.
