I felt nothing but liquid (blood), panic, fear and emotional numbness in the moment of my event. I wasn’t registering I was wounded Vs trying to survive the moment. 10 hours later is when my body “calmed” a bit in trauma and the gun shot wound hurt kicked in and hurt real bad. Shit sucks. Hard impact and then a burning like you wouldn’t believe. Hurts more later than it does at first. Muscles in my calf didn’t work right for a couple months. Getting back to PT was a nightmare. I got birdshot in the back on opening day of pheasant hunting when I was 12 or 13. There were 3 drunk assholes blasting through brush at a target they couldn’t positively identify right at 6 am. Thankfully they were just far enough away and there was enough foliage between us that the spread was knocked down enough that only a dozen or so pellets made it through. Felt mostly like many bee stings all at once. Hurt more to pick the pellets out than anything I remember feeling right as it happened. 12 gauge, left hand. Only knew I was shot because I felt my hand twitch. Looked at it and saw the skin on the palm portion of my thumb spread open, and my thumb gone. I knew right away what to do. Squeezed my wrist tightly, walked to my house about 200 yards away, showed my parents, wrapped it in a clean bead sheet and sat in the car to wait for my parents to make arrangements for someone to be with siblings. Still no pain. After about 10 or 15 mins the pain started. Felt like a sledgehammer with every heart beat. We lived an hour from the nearest hospital, so the throbbing didn’t stop until they gave me drugs.

I shot my own knee with a ricochet of some birdshot when I was little. A buddy and I were (stupidly) shooting this old Weber grill from a trash heap, blasting it with a 12ga loaded with the Blue oyster cult band artwork trending shirt in other words I will buy this really cheap 7 1/2 birdshot / trap shooting shells. It was fun to blast the grill and watch the shot make these big dents but then I one of the ricochet clouds hit me in the knee. Had about half a dozen tiny little shot pellets buried in the skin but in my panic to avoid getting in trouble from my dad, I was able to squeeze them out like pimples, and picked a couple out with a needle like you’d do with a splinter. Only later on that night did it hit me how STUPID we were, cos we could have easily blinded ourselves if anything had hit us in the eyes. Since it was only tiny little poppy seed sized shot, it wasn’t really that painful. Like a few bee stings or something. Probably not even that bad.
