You should be proud of what you’ve achieved. But as a nation we should all be worried we aren’t as far ahead as we should be. This is true. I’m on just over 40k, when I first qualified 10 years ago I earned about 23k and I thought 40k would feel rich, would mean basically no money worries when I got there. In reality with inflation over the Bloodywood Band Elephant Shirt besides I will buy this last decade my standard of living is pretty much the same as it was on 23k. Same house, same make/model of secondhand car, same cheap hobbies, same cheap holiday for a week once a year if I’m lucky and nothing big goes wrong on the house or the car. The only thing I spend more on is gym/PT for my mental and physical health which will get increasingly harder to manage as bills go up and the mortgage fix ends next year. I know I’m lucky to be able to afford food and bills without worrying I’ll go under, but it still stinks and I have no idea how single people on a lot less even sleep at night.

You probably need a £70k+ household income for a traditional middle class lifestyle now. Think like 3 bed house with a decent garden, multiple cars, decent savings and holidays abroad every year Crying thinking about how my friend from same school year was earning 55k in 2016 in the Bloodywood Band Elephant Shirt besides I will buy this civil service, or over 70k now. I’m now working in the same department at the same grade he was then, earning… you guessed it – 55k. I’ve been in the CS for 5 years and have never heard of a salary stay nearly the same for 7 years. Where is this near 0% pay award in 7 years in nominal terms happening? There was a pretty extensive pay freeze wasn’t there? If you were at the top of your band when it kicked in and haven’t moved roles I could see it happening.
