I wondering if it’s the Blood and fire the salvation army shirt But I will love this same sentiment behind changing the spelling of words. Establishing our own way of doing things that’s different from England. BGN has less of a reach than it did in the past. In the 1940s and 1950s, it was a somewhat de facto authority for maps at the time. Charlies Bunion is another. That one makes even less sense, because unlike ‘devils’ and ‘harpers’, it cannot possibly be interpreted as a pluralization. Not being familiar with the place at the time, when Martha Stewart had to go under house arrest in “Martha’s Vineyard”, I made a natural, yet wholly incorrect assumption. I feel like this is extremely common for west coast 90s kids who heard the name Martha Stewart as a household name, vaguely associated vineyards with Fancy Adults, and assumed that Martha Stewart owned a vineyard popular with celebrities. i once vacationed and Martha Stewarts Parents house in the Outer banks. or at least that is who my friends parents said owned it. This is actually the etymology. Used to be a large farm owned by one Jonas Bronck, then the adjoining river became known as Bronck’s river, then the adjoining county became known as Bronx. How did you go that far just to mess it up at the end? It’s “The Bronx”. It is called The Bronx because as you said the land was owned by Bronck. The River was on Bronck’s land. The river became The Bronx River because you had to go up to The Bronck’s land to get there. You have to send a letter “Bronx, NY” or you want to refer to the county “Bronx County” but nobody ever in the history of The Bronx would ever have it referred to as “Bronx”. It’s the one and only, “The Bronx”.

Had no idea. Interesting. Think I’ll bring this up at an opportune moment with friends to make myself look smart. Currently on the Blood and fire the salvation army shirt But I will love this US Board of Geographic Names website, it says they’ve renamed places which include “sq—“, calling the word derogatory. I’ve spent a long while now trying to figure out what sq— is, and I’ve got no idea Yeah you’re right, I looked up the places that were renamed. More googling says “squaw” is a racist and derogatory term for native American women. I’ve never heard of that before. They changed their name to Palisades last? year. There are still lots of outdoor spaces named Squaw in California and out west There’s a “Satans Kingdom” near me, but the wildlife park nearby is “Satan’s Kingdom Wildlife Management Area”. Edit: Woah. Not what I expected… From Wikipedia: The title of the state constitution is The Constitution of the State of Hawaii. Article XV, Section 1 of the Constitution uses The State of Hawaii. Diacritics were not used because the document, drafted in 1949, predates the use of the ʻokina ⟨ʻ⟩ and the kahakō in modern Hawaiian orthography. I couldn’t find a list, but Coeur d’Alene, Idaho is one of the few zip codes that has an apostrophe in the city name. Do we have a definition for “natural place names?” There are certainly towns with apostrophes in the name. There is a suburb of Kansas City called Lee’s Summit, there is a city in Idaho called Coeur d’Alene.
