I thought Britain spent the money pretending they were still a pre-war empire selling outdated and uncompetitive products, whereas Germany retooled its industrial base as a long term investment in high quality goods and manufacturing techniques. Also when Britain joined the EEC we had to ditch all the preferential trade deals we had spent centuries building with the Commonwealth nations which trashed the economies of quite a few countries for a while.

Berlin, Dresden, Chemnitz, Zwickau, Leipzig, Freiberg, Görlitz… All vastly nicer places than Birmingham. Coventry is twinned with Dresden and Kiel. And was with Stalingrad which were the first ever twinned cities. But that has been suspended due to the Ukraine invasion. I find most Midlands cities are similar. Leicester, Birmingham, Derby (especially) are pretty dire. Northern ones are pretty great (as in loads to do). Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh are great to visit. Southern cities are great too. London obviously, Bristol, Portsmouth, etc. Loads to do. Whenever I visit virtually any city in the Midlands, and I do a lot for work, they just feel grim.
