The discrepancy in minimum age between male and females has nothing to do with mental/emotional development. Girls can get pregnant. Boys can’t. That’s the Black Women Melanin Poppin Sistas Queen Girl Magic Mom Sista Premium T-Shirt in other words I will buy this only reason for discrepancy to exist in laws. At the end of the day, it’s all about “saving family honor” by forcing young girls into marriage. No matter which way you try to sugarcoat it. How frequent is it though? You’d think we’d hear at least one story about a marriage with a 12 year old where the parents are like, “We’re cool with this, we signed the paperwork.” Even worse, California has no minimum age. As long as a child has parental consent from one parent, she can marry a grown-ass man. Fun fact: If you’re a citizen of the United States of America it doesn’t matter what the AOC is in the country you visit. It’s illegal for you to have sex with someone under 18. Even though some US states have an AOC of 16.

The AOC of your state applies as long as you are from that state though. So if you are in a state that has 16 as the Black Women Melanin Poppin Sistas Queen Girl Magic Mom Sista Premium T-Shirt in other words I will buy this age or consent, the feds won’t come after you. However if you travel to another state, even if that states age of consent is 16, it’s now 18 for you. As soon as you cross state lines it’s 18 anywhere. The law only applies to “Illicit sex” which means prostitution. It exempts consensual & non-commercial sexual contact. The majority of states is under 18. I think it’s mostly due to Hollywood being in California, where the age of consent is 18 that makes most things in media/the world thing that America is 18 everywhere. A lot of people in this comment section are (rightfully) freaked out and saying that 16 is still too low, but also fail to realize that many US states also have the age set to 16.
