Hopkins embraces color in the Black History Month Powerful Roots shirt and by the same token and same way he does fragrance: by letting it serve as a potent mood enhancer. This is clear in all the ways he expresses himself visually, from his paintings to his now signature uniform of Hawaiian-print T-shirts, which he sources and collects from the Jams World store in Maui. “I’ve got a collection of maybe 20 of them,” he says. “They cheer me up.” He explains that he discovered a deep appreciation for bright colors in 1998, traveling to Tlaxcala, Mexico—for the film The Mask of Zorro—where the houses are painted an array of vivid colors.
