I’ve always thought airplane mode itself was a step too far, but I guess it’s the Billy Joel 60th anniversary 1964 2024 thank you for the memories signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this simple direction. I don’t use it because I’m usually listening to airpods or something over bluetooth. Consensus seems to be that it’s the cell radio specifically that is the problem, and at those heights and speeds, it’s also basically useless, so it should be turned off anyway if not just for saving your battery. I’ve often wondered why phones don’t just automatically turn off the cell radio in these situations. Between knowing the speed you’re moving, the height you’re at, the unavailability or quick switching of towers, and on top of all that just knowing you’re on an active flight because of an app; it could easily manage it for you, even just as an option. They do provide a small amount of interference with communication and navigation equipment. It’s not a problem if a few phones are being used at all but say it’s an a380 and 500 odd people on board are all off aeroplane mode, all searching uselessly for a network whilst in the sky, it can become a nuisance or possibly cause a something freaky in nature to occur. Why bother risking it for a phone that isn’t going to receive service?

Let’s think about this for two seconds. If a mobile phone could down a plane, I’d never fly. If a mobile phone has a 1:1000000 chance of disrupting a plane I’d never fly. Why? Because the power levels are so small that if something as critical as flight instruments or controls were affected and not adequately shielded that thing wood be a disaster for so many other reasons. Aircraft get hit by lightning quite frequently. They cope with that EMP. Sometimes people don’t know what they are talking about. Like those signs displayed at the petrol stations warning of explosion from mobile phone use. It can’t happen. Not in any way at all. If it could, then your solenoid action from locking the doors remotely would have blown petrol stations sky high on a daily basis. They should really say something like “Don’t wear nylon clothes on a low humidity day”. The best explanation I’ve read so far is that if everyone has the phone active they’d all be hunting for base stations. At best it’s going to run your battery down and maybe at worst it upsets the protocols because the system is not designed to pair with 300 phones way up in the air racing at 500 kph.
