Tell him you’re worried about him and you don’t want to stop being friends but you also don’t want your friendship to be merely based on going out drinking. Let him know you’re there if he wants to talk about anything. Stick to the facts & let him decide what to do next. Maybe say you’ve noticed a lack of motivation in him & suggest he talks to a GP about feeling low. Sounds like he needs your help. He may not want it but try anyway. Also maybe suggest a different activity. Walking somewhere nice cheers you up and it’s easy to get into deeper conversations about life and such. If he doesn’t want to go just leave him to it & say the offer stands if he wants to meet up another time. If he reaches out later it’s a good sign he wants to get better.

I disagree. Sounds like OP has skipped a few steps and landed at a decision to reluctantly cut his friend loose because he doesn’t know what to do about his frustrating relationship. He says it’s a shame and that he doesn’t want to say goodbye, which suggests he’d like there to be a better outcome. Be direct about it I think. If it doesn’t work out, so be it. At least you tried. You just need to say “no”.
