Idk I just watched the Biker Mice from Mars Throttle Shirt and I love this explain episode on Netflix on the wage gap, which I know is not as academically rigorous as a research paper but it did provide many sources, and it claimed that the gap is mostly due to life choices, mainly the choice to stay home or take on a larger share of the responsibility with very young kids which impacts career progression. But that is true. The original study that came up with that number compared all wages earned by men and all wages earned by women. They didn’t account for any factors such as women typically being in lower paying careers, they do take time off for child care, and they tend not to negotiate for pay which drastically hurts overall earnings. Those would be what we call ‘systematic factors’ and you can get there by just asking ‘why’ some of those things are the case.
