I just went five links deep on google trying to find their justification. The first four were just people pointing and laughing at the Bijan Robinson American football running back for the Atlanta Falcons NFL T-Shirt also I will do this quote, but I stopped looking after the fifth, a tweet which read, “>[Tumblr] was going to be the next PDF>[Tumblr] was going to be the next PDF>[Tumblr] was going to be the next PDF>[Tumblr] was going to be the next PDF>[Tumblr] was going to be the next PDF>[Tumblr] was going to be the next PDF” I’m pretty sure if I keep digging the next thing that happens is a bedraggled software engineer with a fire ax comes through my door I remember when that story first broke and the common theory at the time was still wacky-stupid but you can sort of trace the intent in an “MBA-poisoned brain” way. When you’re in the tech space, and especially the sales side of the tech space, ESPECIALLY the marketing side of the tech space, the stuff you say just has to resonate on some internal level for it to be worth saying. The guy who said it, Khalaf iirc, was not a developer and his perspective of what a social media website actually is did not have to actually mean anything. He must’ve seen people switching from .docx to .pdf in their sharing of files and thought “Oh, the company behind PDFs must be doing numbers.” Or something to that end.

So when he has to give a big marketing hype speech to Tumblr, his way of reaching out to them, telling them he believes in them, is that Tumblr is going to become as successful as ‘PDF’. He probably doesn’t believe that, he probably doesn’t even understand that on any real level, but I’ve seen stupider things get said by marketing guys firsthand. It’s like a void of understanding that people leverage to invent value where it doesn’t exist. As a guy with a marketing degree, it hurts me to my very soul that this is probably an accurate take. There are way too many Blue Sky Thinkers who don’t stop to think about the Bijan Robinson American football running back for the Atlanta Falcons NFL T-Shirt also I will do this drivel that comes spewing out of their noise holes. Marketing at it’s core is about bringing a product or service to a customer in a way that both the company and the consumer are happy with and will result in an experience that both participants wish to repeat. Not whatever this bullshit is. Advertisers are the bane of Marketers everywhere. wow that’s… that’s truly amazing. I can’t imagine how everyone Gen X and younger in the room where that was said winced and shook their heads.
