The older and wiser you get, the more you realise how many people are just full of shit. Had one mate who joined the army when we were younger. He’d told all his army mates about his home life, being settled down with a Mrs and a dog. He’d also told us stories about some loser in the army who was crying when they did some gas chamber training, and who was too afraid to jump out of a plane.

When I was doing my A-Levels, a mate told me he was having trials for our local county cricket club. He was 18, didn’t play organised cricket and hadn’t done for years, and when we’d played in the local park with some other guys, he was no better than I was – ie, not very good. There was no way it was even remotely possible. I actually did have a trial for them once (despite me being awful, I think it was just a mass try-out where all the village colt teams sent in whatever players they wanted), but that was when I was 12, because that’s the age that county sides would actually want to find new players. They don’t want random 18 year old lads who haven’t spent years getting proper coaching. And the kids I’d played with in the age groups at my club, who also played for the county sides, were all really good – miles better than this guy could ever be.
