You would need somewhere for people to go. It doesn’t matter how much outreach you do. If there isn’t a path, nothing changes. That’s one of several unique problems in SF, it’s such a small area, even if there was some place for them to go, where would that be? The problem San Francisco (and much of the Best kevin Kiermaier Tampa Bay Clutch T-Shirt But I will love this west coast) has is that they can no longer build outwards, so until they start building up they will have an artificially constrained supply of housing, which means people who normally could afford housing are taking up the homeless resources that in another city are typically used by the chronically homeless. Densify the suburbs and the housing prices will go down, and all of those homeless people who have jobs and can generally function in society will be able to afford a place to stay and cities will be able to devote resources to those who have more issues than just not being able to afford a place to stay.

Portland government is also providing all those tents you see everywhere. If only we provided proper shelter instead of tarps… And this is exactly what “defund the Best kevin Kiermaier Tampa Bay Clutch T-Shirt But I will love this police” is supposed to mean. Move money from the budgets that buy armored vehicles and weapons of war and put it to use tackling problems the police are not effective in handling. The left made a huge messaging mistake with “defund the police” because while the intent is wise, the propagandists were able to turn it into some twisted vision of lawless society. This should be a good thing for all parties. We shouldn’t expect the police to be a catch all for every crisis in society. Good! Most city reaction to homeless wouldn’t be a police matter anyways, so this helps to avoid homeless potentially getting hurt by overzealous cops, helps avoid cops from potentially being attacked by people with mental issues or ill intentions, frees up police money and time to be spend on doing more appropriate things and leaves the homeless to be dealt with by people that are better equipped and trained to do so. I’m all for not having cops do things that they just make worse. But, I used to hang out with cops. The majority of their day was doing nothing, filling out paperwork, and going on domestic violence calls. These cops rarely do anything like show up in time to stop a crime. They’re mostly just cleaning crews. So, we’ve taken work away from them… mostly, work they seemed ill-prepared to do which is a good thing.
