Access to our cottage (also in Ontario) is a road. That road is actually running across everyone’s properties, and each cottager officially owns their own section of road. However, you can not stop anyone from using it. I.E. you can not block your section because there are more later down the Best bird Friends to the End shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this road that would need to get through. No single person owns the entire road. Now, if they somehow do own the road, there are easement laws in Ontario that would allow you to access your property if that is the only land access. Google Ontario Cottage Easement and lots of info will come up. First thing I would do is get a survey. There are online tools for Ontario just for this. You might have to pay for access but there are free ones you can access as well. Talk to your town to see if they have one. You can also ask for proof that they own the property. Do you know where your property line is? Does it end at the road, or go beyond it. If you own the opposite side of the road I bet you each own your own section.

I would talk with the Best bird Friends to the End shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this other cottagers and get a lawyer to look into it. They could actually own the road or they could be full of shit. You guys are entitled to be able to access your property even if they do! My mother had a similar issue after buying property in Florida (yes, totally different) but they were able to go through their title insurance to pay out the value. Specifically, she bought property with a road to the lake. Other neighbors were already using the road to the lake. It was already was declared an easement both for neighbors and emergency services. The title company missed all this and had to pay my mother back the value of that piece of property. I’m wondering if the neighbor who ‘owns’ the road could do similar. If other people are legally allowed access to that road, maybe they’d be happy at least getting a credit to ‘share’ it.
