There are going to be bigger differences between these two career paths than hours worked and salary paid. Owning a business with lucrative growth, by definition, precludes any semblance of work-life balance during the growth period. Can you cash out & get back to a healthy balance? Yes – but you’re less likely to, since the simple act of business ownership changes you, making you less likely to “leave it at the office” at the end of the day. Add to this the oh-so-tempting “lifestyle creep” that generally attends increased pay – you may find you can’t afford to go back to salaried existence. I need the higher pay right now with 2 kids about to go to college. I’m hoping in a few years to scale back to something more balanced. I’m a crane operator and get stuck working high hours often depending on the customer and I’ll tell you I’d rather have the work life balance. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. The 200k job is in the construction industry which, like you mentioned, regularly has long hours. Having a good income and work life balance seems hard to get these days. I am privileged to have it.
