Barry is a show where people are constantly lying to themselves. He can’t ever deny anything anyone says regarding the movie now; otherwise, it invites a number of questions that lead to a very sticky place, legally speaking. He can’t ever talk about his childhood without implicating his mother indirectly, since no one seems to be particularly aware of the eight years they spent hiding from the cops together. At the same time, he’s not working with the full truth of what occurred; even Sally is not fully familiar with the inner workings of Barry’s mind, and it’s unlikely they ever talk about it to begin with. Guess his only option is what we saw: gaslight himself into believing that the movie is essentially accurate, so he can see his dad as the hero he wanted him to be. Sad shit.

Our protagonist who has done inexcusable things because of his own narcism got away with it again and is being praised for them. What’s the alternative? He has a mother who despises him and cares more about getting praise for putting on mediocre high school plays that her actual son. If he knew the truth about Barry, all it would do is make him feel unloved and a spawn between a psychopath and a narcissist who doesn’t love him. This way he can at least grow up thinking his dad was a hero, truly loved him, and hopefully he can go off to college a semi-functioning young adult capable of ditching Sally forever and living his own life. Sometimes ignorance is bliss, and for John, believing his father was a hero is just that and gives him a fighting chance to not end up a monster.
