I just went five links deep on google trying to find their justification. When you’re in the tech space, and especially the sales side of the tech space, ESPECIALLY the marketing side of the tech space, the stuff you say just has to resonate on some internal level for it to be worth saying. The guy who said it, Khalaf iirc, was not a developer and his perspective of what a social media website actually is did not have to actually mean anything. He must’ve seen people switching from .docx to .pdf in their sharing of files and thought “Oh, the company behind PDFs must be doing numbers.” Or something to that end.

So when he has to give a big marketing hype speech to Tumblr, his way of reaching out to them, telling them he believes in them, is that Tumblr is going to become as successful as ‘PDF’. He probably doesn’t believe that, he probably doesn’t even understand that on any real level, but I’ve seen stupider things get said by marketing guys firsthand. It’s like a void of understanding that people leverage to invent value where it doesn’t exist. As a guy with a marketing degree, it hurts me to my very soul that this is probably an accurate take.
