Any Rand’s Fountainhead was right on about folks being threatened by people who have true passion for their work. It sounds as though you need to become more socially aware so you can pretend to acclimate to what others expect. People who focus on how they love the Barbie I’m a Real Doll shirt but in fact I love this high level mission generally don’t want to do the grunt work slogging through pain that actually working entails Practice interviewing with someone who will give you good feedback. You maybe trying too hard to become memorable. It could also be that there’s a company where you will fit right in with your personality. I also read ‘too enthusiastic’ as coming across as desperate so keep that in mind. It may not have been the trivia. I’ve been told the same thing. “Too type A” or “too lively”. Translation ? They want an unthinking drone. They can’t handle us ,,,,,,,, NEXT! Depends on the industry. I know Disney won’t hire people for corporate if you’re too “into” Disney culture because they want you to make rational and responsible decisions if you work for the company and not just be a fan boy/girl. Same with music industry. I would never hire any of the people that were trying to make it big themselves or clearly wanted to try know famous people/came off thirsty. I’d pick the people who were skilled in the job/expertise and weren’t as interested in the specific artist themselves. You don’t want to stand out too much. I recently was hiring for a position. We had a candidate who was fantastic on paper, but was too much in the interview. Her intro was over the top. She came across as boastful. I think she was trying to demonstrate how passionate she is, but in the end, we decided she would be a bad culture fit for the team.

Have you received this kind of feedback before? I would take it into consideration but remember that this is just one data point, and job interviews are a lot like dating – assessments of your personality are subjective. Rather than try to change your whole personality, which is just going too far the Barbie I’m a Real Doll shirt but in fact I love this other way and won’t do you any favors, try to hit on the things that may have triggered this assessment. I think you already have an idea since you have listed them in your post. Just take a different approach next time but don’t compromise who you are. I have a better track record with getting offers when I am more myself, even if it feels like being honest is not the “textbook” answer. I calmed down in interviews by going in with the mindset that it is a meeting, not an interview. It relieved the pressure of an interview or trying to impress someone and made the flow more natural.
