Silver bay didn’t want to leave and offered them a loan to improve their water and power infrastructure. (they use hydroelectric so hand in hand) but the village council declined and so lost the business. because it’s a reservation, there’s hardly any new housing being built either, because there’s no land owners, nobody can get a mortgage because the banks can’t claim the property if they default. so the town says small and backwater, despite being placed much nearer the capital than a lot of other Alaskan villages

The whole issue with monopolies is that they control the whole market. They can set deals with providers, spend more on marketing, lower prices faaaar below you and crush you then buy you out, or a myriad of other things. Breaking into a market wihen there is already a monopoly is a massive undertaking, or it wouldnt be a monopoly in the first place Again, there is a difference between a monopoly like that and one born out of sheer competition (like youtube) or too small a market (like the user above) Nobody says the existing monopoly wouldn’t fight back. You make my point by stating that they’d lower their prices.
