I love it when I’m not in the mood for social interaction but still have to get groceries that I’m not forced to interact with anyone. I also like that I can put my stuff directly in my bag at my own pace. Much more efficient. The thing is, you can be charged with crimes for not using the self checkout correctly but the company doesn’t provide training to customers. It’s a scam for customers to accept this liability. I feel that’s a bit of a reach given how brazen some people can actually be. Be it they purposefully walk out or purposefully mis-scan, people will always steal. Also, depending on state/country, you can’t be held liable for the malfunction of a company’s machine. Even if you break it, there’s protections for private individuals against corporations and businesses. As someone who has worked in a Walmart, they literally never hire enough cashiers anyway. They have a thing called “code spark” where anyone not doing something anywhere in the store has to go up front and cash people out. Self checkout reduced the number of code sparks by a measurable amount and none of the cashiers were fired because there were never enough to begin with. It’s not taking jobs from anyone, honestly.

Not if you’re buying beer. Or something won’t scan right. Or you accidentally miss scanning something, and store security gives you shit. That’s fair.
