She got a kick out of it. No rounding occurred. That’s incorrect. The donation, per the IRS, is still your donation. Meaning only you can claim that. The store acts as a middleman for the good PR. Those donation are a scam, you are supposed to be able to get a credit on your taxes from donation but in this case as the shop is doing the donation for you they are getting the taxes writeoff for free. They collect from you and your guilty conscience and use that to lower their tax bill because the corporation makes those tax deductible donations in their own name. The grocery stores give this money you donated to a food bank as a credit. They look at their warehouse and see what is overstocked or close to it’s best by date. The food bank can then buy these items with this credit. walmart, a company making $13 billion annually with owners that are multi billionaires, who’s CEO is almost a billion in net worth, asking me to donate to fund kids hospitals…foh I was just thinking about this 10 minutes ago. And grocery stores discard perfectly good food waste and will hire an army to make sure nobody has access to said free and perfectly edible by having police officers arrest them for being hungry, while the food rots and goes to a landfill It might be different if they didn’t throw millions of tons of good food away every day. Food that generally isn’t given away, and food that they’ve helpfully wrapped in plastic.

I am still furious at a company that charged me SALES TAX on a $1.00 donation. I got two separate credit card charges – one for the product (with tax), and another for the donation, also with tax. WTH. Never again. I work at a business that does this, and right now we are running a donation that supports black owned small businesses. I said to a coworker, I could not give a shit about these donations, I looked into it and I don’t even think the people get much of the money donated. My coworker says “I don’t care about them either, why should anyone need help more than anybody else?” And I just walked away from that can of worms.
