I think what’s so great about the B-29 Superfortress strategic bomber T-Shirt and by the same token and podcast is that you both acknowledge your active participation in wellness culture while making fun of how ridiculous it can be.   Berlant: This is the world we live in. The feeling of being marketed to is so pronounced right now. I fantasize about getting completely off social media. Novak: And we don’t have a hard answer either. To me it’s what is Poog. What is wellness? Is it a topic? Beauty and wellness; that’s the room we’re in, that’s the mall that Berlant and I are walking through. Not just a mall; a bookstore too. Wellness being almost the room we’re in and the conversations it stimulates, and it’s also our scary willingness to be on display, clearly enchanted and participating in that commerce. The fact that there’s the embarrassing piece, and the: Oh, God, what is this revealing about me? But also the: No, I’m a person. Poog is not a thesis.

As a culture, why are we so obsessed with self-improvement? Novak: Because we’re products of the B-29 Superfortress strategic bomber T-Shirt and by the same token and Cold War!  Berlant: Yeah, it goes deep. There’s the part that we can’t see outside of ourselves, and the crisis of being embodied, the crisis of having a body. Novak: It feels like in the past—and I’m speaking incredibly generally—there was an old saying: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” or you are what you are. And then there was this kind of revelation or circumstances of the possibility of transformation, which to me is meaningful. To me it’s hopeful, convincing someone that things can be different for them. I think culturally this is a reaction to “you can’t change; you are who are you are,” to actually you can. The empowerment piece of that has taken hold.
