It turned out to be the Awesome one week they love me Next week they hate me T-Shirt But I will love this first of many. While writing my memoir—Featherhood, a story about fathers and birds—dead or dying jackdaws took to throwing themselves at me with alarming regularity, like reprimands from on high. No sooner had one been stretchered off to the local vet, than another would come scuttling out of the bushes, cat-clawed or hawk-ripped, and I, like a fool, would bend down and pick it up.

Jackdaws flutter and hop through the Awesome one week they love me Next week they hate me T-Shirt But I will love this pages of my book. My biological father, an eccentric poet called Heathcote Williams, who vanished in the dead of night when I was a baby, had once lived with a jackdaw. He raised it, almost like a child, feeding it worms and—inexplicably—warm milk. The bird, christened Jack, rode around on his shoulder like Long John Silver’s parrot, and had a pirate’s eye for buried treasure too, digging shiny silver sixpences (as well as bottle caps and cigarette foil) from the earth.
