Lloyd Austin, Biden’s pick for defense secretary, has a long history of working within the Pentagon. He served as the first African American commander of U.S. Central Command from 2013 to 2016, and as the Army’s vice chief of staff from 2012 to 2013. Austin also served as a senior military assistant to the secretary of defense under President George W. Bush.

Austin has worked closely with Biden in the past. He was the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq when Biden was vice president. Austin also served as the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan from 2010 to 2011, during which time Biden visited the country several times.

If confirmed by the Senate, Austin would be the first African American to serve as defense secretary. He would also be the first retired general to lead the Pentagon since Jim Mattis, who served under President Donald Trump.

Austin’s nomination has been praised by many, including former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Panetta said that Austin is “a man of great integrity and character” who has “the experience and judgment to lead the Department of Defense.”
However, Austin’s nomination has also been met with some criticism. Some have questioned whether he is too close to the defense industry, and others have expressed concerns about his record in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Despite these criticisms, Austin is likely to be confirmed by the Senate. He has the support of both Democrats and Republicans, and he is seen as a qualified and experienced candidate.
