I’m from the August Made In 1984 Flower 40 Years Of Being Awesome T-Shirt and I will buy this Midwest so the other people saying bad things about it are silly / wrong I think, but saying you cannot understand why people would live in beautiful areas with tons to do is odd Honest answer to your question, because the PNW is worth paying the money to live in, it’s beautiful here, I’ve lived all around the country and though it’s expensive it’s worth it As a non white person I find the Midwest alien to me. The people are friendly but they don’t understand me, and the ethnic food just doesn’t taste right. The people mostly, access to food and culture from all over the world, lots of entertainment and job opportunities as well. Honestly, as someone who lives in the northeast, I wouldn’t go to the Midwest because of the social politics of the region. The homophobia and underlying racism are a while put off. The rampant anti-intellectualism is another issue. Edit: Also, are you seriously acting like your outstate areas aren’t also full of weirdo conservatives? Or that major cities in the northeast don’t have a shit ton of blatant racists? The difference is that the weirdo conservatives are unable to wield significant power, because the relative population density of northeast states means that rural people are heavily outnumbered by urban/suburban people. The Midwest and Sun Belt states have a different dynamic because you have one or two major blue cities, but then the rest of the map is red rural areas. So even if you have a 50/50 split you end up with a Wisconsin/North Carolina/Georgia dynamic where the big cities can (sometimes) elect Democrat senators and governors in statewide races, but the state legislatures are always controlled by hardcore Republicans.

It seems like there are more because you see them in the same place you see the anti-intellectualism: online. Sure, you get small-town conservatives, but do you think you don’t have them in upstate New York? You think a bunch of Philly bros aren’t homophobic? There’s a reason Boston is known as an incredible racist city. High salaries increase your purchasing power too. Housing and food is more expensive but cars and clothes are the same price in both places. Which means places with higher salaries get a “discount” on goods and services which are priced the same across the country.
