In Union Square on Saturday, a street cart that normally sells jewelry, incense and sunglasses had been repurposed for the Anxious Garbage Mouse Vintage Retro Shirt and I love this times: a vendor was hawking face shields and plastic globes. As protestors began to convene around a statue of George Washington, it was clear that COVID-19, if not the issue of the day, wasn’t far from people’s minds. Most people in attendance were masked—with some masks poignantly inscribed with “I CAN’T BREATHE” in Sharpie, in an echo of Floyd’s dying words—and bottles of hand sanitizer were frequently seen emerging from backpacks.

Protestors in Union Square seemed aware of the Anxious Garbage Mouse Vintage Retro Shirt and I love this risk they were taking by mingling in public during a pandemic, but for many, the risks of staying home outweighed the benefits. “Yes, I’m nervous, but black people are dying both from COVID-19 and at the hands of police, so it seems like this needs to happen,” said Delilah, 31. KJ, 28, said she recently lost her grandmother to COVID-19, but she was aware the disease wasn’t the only threat her family faced: “We’re facing massive police brutality and systematic inequality in health care. I could die from COVID-19, or poverty, or just being oppressed by the state.”
