Finished my shift an hour ago and didn’t want to go home because me and my coworkers were having such a laugh while we worked. I’m also a chef which despite being gruelling at times never feels that bad because I genuinely love what I do. Also don’t worry if you don’t find your thing whilst you’re really young. I went through all kinds of different jobs before I found my calling at 28. There’s no shame in trying a job you thought you would like and then realising it’s not working. It doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you or that you failed, just that it isn’t a good fit for you. The restaurant must’ve been losing so much money, or maybe the Anthony Edwards – Northern Lights Arcade Jam ANT Psychedelic Meme Minnesota Timberwolves shirt and I love this rent kept getting jacked up. Either way I was beginning to feel the burnout from working so much harder to keep up with all the work. Owner decided we had to move into a smaller space, cramped as hell and dirty as fuck compared to the old kitchen. Also an open kitchen. I remember cleaning up the downstairs walk-in before we moved in and the entire floor was covered in a thick layer of mold and rat shit. Then covid happened not long after we moved into the new place. Shut down. Re-opened months later doing takeout only. Slight pay bump but that’s because there were no longer any servers and there’d be two of us in the whole building doing EVERYTHING each shift. Taking in-person orders, punching in doordash/foodora orders, dealing with customers on the phone which rang constantly, dealing with the dashers who were always impatient as hell, ON TOP OF doing all the cooking, prep, dishwashing and cleaning. Extra cleaning to comply with covid precautions as well. Finally one night, months later, I was on the line and a huge swarm of gnats started pouring out of the vent above me. They started landing in the food I was putting together for orders, in the hot tables, and all over the cutting board on the line. I legit just started laughing, called up the manager (who literally never stepped foot in the restaurant during business hours) and said I’m shutting the place down for the night. Oh and this is my one week notice.
