Vikings have an unduly noble reputation, but they were complete cunts. Search for the American professional baseball third baseman signature manny machado T-Shirt in addition I really love this description of a Viking burial. It is horror after brutal horror. Butchering dogs and horses. Gang rape of children, with their ultimate brutal sacrificial murder. While I share your concern about the mystification of Norse societies… mate, you can’t take one account of one group of not even a straight up Norse society but rather the Rus, a Swedish ruling elite that had by then already assimilated with the Slavic groups they ruled over, to be representative of a timespan of multiple centuries and dozens of different societies. And Ibn Fadlan didn’t even travel to the Rus’ lands proper, he met them in the land of the Volga Bulgars, on the very far eastern edge of lands where Norse societies traveled. The people he met were very much “frontiersmen” and adventurers who at best were the leading groups on their ships with crews from all over the baltic and what is now Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. So nothing he wrote is indicative of what was going on in Norway, Denmark or elsewhere, neither at the time nor any other time over the centuries of Norse history. It’s based off one arabic traveller’s testimony who claimed to have witnessed some rather alarming shit in the Kievan rus. One can imagine funerary rites and customs would have varied when considering the vastly different places and centuries the word “viking culture” encompasses.

That leaves the outsider’s point of view, which you can imagine had some reason to play up their barbarity. Unpopular opinion: The only reason Vikings are made out to be the ‘fiercest’ warrior race is because they terrorized England, which became a world power that had/has far reaching cultural/sociological/academic influence. Most Scandinavian communities were regular folks with ‘Vikings’ being primarily occupied with agriculture. Compared to the steppe peoples like the Scythians or Mongols, or any Bronze Age empire like the Assyrians, and the Vikings are bush league in comparison What would have happened if Harold Godwinson had won Hastings? Maybe if his brother wasn’t such a dick he would have had a chance.
