Yes, bad things can happen when you are travelling, but I think you can safely speak to Thai police, they are pretty useless, but they can mediate or give the offender a warning – maybe can help others in the future. He sounds like he’d had a bit of a drink or smoke. Thai people aren’t so direct when it comes to crime, usually a con or stealing something from an unlocked room (or what is really scary, whilst asleep) is more likely than a mugging.

I too had an issue on Ko Lanta, it was a bit of a wake up for me.
