Exactly, people acting like Americans are barbarians because of not using zed… But S/F, D/T, M/N, and so forth are all at least as problematic. Why not call n “nep” and m “mab” then? Certainly those letters sound close too and come up much much more often than z and c do. I don’t think I’ve ever had a time in my life where I confused C and Z. I’ve even confused B and D, M and N but not C and Z. Not to an American speaker. Z and C are very different to most of us, the “z” and “c” sounds are very different on the tongue. Z vibrates, C does not. I’m probably the only Brit who thinks that ‘zed’ should become ‘zee’. The English speaking world doesn’t pronounce ‘zedebra’ or ‘zedero’ or ‘zedoo’. The US had a wonderful chance and took it, to streamline the language for a small amount of efficiency. Plough becomes plow, apologise becomes apologize because that’s how the words are pronounced when you read them!
