The pandemic made everything worse in Education. The problems inherent in education were magnified and made worse after COVID. A lot of US teachers have been committing suicide as well. Edit: surprised by the All The Best Freaks Are Here Shirt Also,I will get this downvotes. I added words in parenthesis for clarity; by culture mean modern culture, not traditional culture. Yes this is correct. Teacher used to be someone that should be respected like a second parent. So that was why they allowed punishments in schools. I remember my parents telling the teacher to don’t hesitate to displine me if I’m not behaving well. But nowadays, I believe due to the rise of Hak-Wons, which are paid private education and other forms of it, the parents see Hak-Won teachers as a mere service worker because they’re paying for a service and the “Customer is the King” applied there. So the parents are now used to being ‘Karen’ at this point that now they’re treating the school teachers the same. This is true in the US as well. Teachers are extremely underpaid, expected to buy their own supplies, and also have to deal with the added stress of school shootings being so prevalent these days. Definitely not worth it so kids end up getting terrible teachers who are only it to do the minimum and take their paycheck.

Is this hyper competitive and materialistic culture I keep hearing about online only in Seoul? I live in a rich part of Daegu and I feel like most people, including my students, are pretty chill and respectful. I think some of it has to do with the All The Best Freaks Are Here Shirt Also,I will get this fact that there are less and less children being born and many parents only have one child so they treat the child like royalty and the child becomes extremely entitled. The parents think their precious demon spawn can do no wrong and refuse to believe their spawn is at fault. I know math and English teachers who work in China and they said the students in China are more respectful than the ones in South Korea. They also said bullying in South Korea was far more common and severe than in China. Apparently even their Korean colleagues would bully them while their Chinese colleagues were friendly and never gave them any problems. So I think it’s more of an issue specific to Korean society with how hierarchal it is. I see my younger female coworkers get the worst of it. People seem to feel free to be as hostile as they like to a younger woman. They say stuff to them they’d never dare say to me.
