Looking at a historic plaque, I was explaining its significance to my then-BF and clarifying that the Dutch have some residual issues° with Germany for understandable reasons. Guy came up to us and asked, in Dutch, what was happening on the other side of the canal. I understood him and responded – in German. Oops. Luckily he both understood and laughed it off. I then had to explain to BF why I’d just unwittingly done the thing they’d told us not to do. ° not really bad, but our hosts did say that it was much better to speak English than German, in some situations. Since I didn’t think I understood enough Dutch to attempt speaking it, I was surprised as well as embarrassed. I genuinely thought he’d asked and I’d responded in English, until I saw their faces and realised what I’d done.

It’s more because Germans have a reputation of visiting the Netherlands and speaking German at Dutch people, (seemingly) arrogantly assuming all Dutch people can switch into German, when English is usually the preffered second language. Especially in Leiden as it’s near the beach towns which attract a lot of German tourists. No, their language warning was not war-related. I forget what the plaque was for but it was war-related so we’d been discussing that just before, and I think I was mostly shocked that my brain could go from “talking about the war” to “and it’s better to speak English” straight to “here’s a handy German answer to the question you were asked; BTW let’s not notice that it was in Dutch and you don’t speak Dutch”. I felt like Basil Fawlty. I think the guy’s surprise was because of the language switch, especially when he realised I was English; he was very nice about it when I apologised, and said it was lucky he’d asked me such an easy question (something along the lines of “what’s happening over there?”). My BF’s was a mix of “she speaks Dutch??” and “OMG did she just upset him?”.
